BIA offers social skills groups at 3 of our locations (Emeryville, Fresno and Visalia). BIA’s social skills groups are offered to individuals ages 6-18. Groups occur after-school from 1-4 times weekly. Group sizes range from 4-8 participants, with an average ratio of 1 adult per every 4 participants.
BIA’s goal is to create an inclusive nature to our group settings (social skills groups and preschool) by inviting peers to participate who have skills that are at least equal or greater than the skills of the group. Participants are grouped in levels so that they have the opportunity to learn communication and social skills from typical peers.
The overall skills addressed in these groups is improving the social and communicative competence of the participants. Goals will be developed for each member and could include one or more of the following skills:
Participating in conversations (e.g., turn taking, looking towards the listener, remaining on topic)
Engaging cooperatively with peers (e.g., taking turns in games, social referencing, adhering to social norms, responding to peers initiations).
Pragmatic communication skills (e.g., reading and using gestures and facial expressions)
Perspective taking, flexibility, problem solving and negotiating with peers
Improving awareness of pop culture age appropriate topics and interests
Recognizing bullying and how to handle in social situations
Age appropriate hygiene and self care skills
Engaging with peers in a community setting such as a bowling alley or restaurant.
Funding could be provided through your health insurance carrier, a California state regional center or through private pay.
If you are interested in more information and finding out if your child has the prerequisite skills (e.g., toilet trained, no maladaptive behaviors, emergent communication skills) to participate in a group please contact our office.
